OUR SCHOOL-BASED K-12 PREVENTION PROGRAMS:
MISSION STATEMENT: To empower young people with information that can create personal self-confidence, resulting in
positive choices, the rejection of detrimental substances, and the development of leadership skills.
"MR. JIM" Merrills is a national speaker and author, having performed for
nearly one-half million students. His presentations incorporate healthy lifestyle messages (not just cliches) and life-skill information,
with illusion and hands-on activities. His professional background in substance abuse treatment/prevention and prestidigitation
skills has has opened doors to schools and organizations across the country.
Experience the Magic is unique in that it includes almost everything: full day K-12 presentations, grade-by-grade
presentations (elementary), all-student assemblies with follow-up small-group presentations (Jr./Sr. high), and evening programs
for families, or parents. Feel free to browse our list of programs below, visiting their pages filled with detailed descriptions,
recommendations and photos.
MAGIC OF BEING DRUG-FREE
program presentations focus on the topics
of tobacco, alcohol, responsibility, choices, consequences, and much more!
MAGIC OF LIVING FREE (Peer Relations/Violence)
Using grade appropriate patter, this presentation focuses on issues like power, conflict, negative feelings and anger, types of violence,
"bullying", dating and abuse, prejudice, and acceptance. (Visit this page to see all the details, including our MEAP Core
Democratic Values presentations!)
MAGIC of the 3 "R's"
Reading, writing and arithmetic come alive in these presentations, as Mr. Jim demonstrates how these are the foundation for becoming an
author. Students are taken on a visual journey, seeing first how books come to life, and then, how an author's notes and drawings evolve into
a final production--a book!
MAGIC OF SPORT STACKING (formerly called Cup Stacking)
As the name implies, this program builds on skills like coordination, concentration,
motivation, determination, perseverence, team-work, and much more! Incorporate this growing, cutting-edge sport in your school's
physical education program today!
MAGIC OF SUCCESS (Juggling)
is a hands-on presentation that focuses on setting goals, staying focused on tasks,
coping with setbacks, dealing with "put downs", gaining gratification through personal effort,
and building self confidence.
MAGIC OF MATH
(grades 5-12) examines magic's dependence on math; its principles,
and principle numbers. Trick after trick, students are given an opportunity to "figure" out
how the magician does it--using math, of course! (Be sure to read the sample student comments on our Math & Magic page.)
MAGIC IN PEER TRAINING
(Grades 5-12) Magic is a fantastic way for older students to convey important messages (e.g., drug-free, safe choices, respect)
to younger students. Participate now in
a peer-training program...on site at your school! Your group of student leaders will observe basic magic principles, and then learn them
through hands-on applications. Adding the needed "message," they are equipped and prepared to give their own presentation.
MAGIC CAMP
Now, you can learn magic, from a magician! A magic camp--usually conducted at a community library--is a great place to learn
different types of magic, as well as balloon sculpting and juggling! (If you can't find a camp near you, scroll up and order one of
our magic camp books!)
LISTEN/WINNER Magazines
Check out these drug and violence-free magazines for youth, and the list of national recommendations that support them.
As a monthly resource for healthy and positive choices, Experience the Magic provides these publications (and teacher's guides)
in many of its schools.
METH
Media presentation on the drug Meth for middle and high school students. Designed in cooperation with the Oregon Meth Task Force, this presentation addresses
the problem from a variety of directions. (Page under construction)
